The St. John the Baptist Parish Animal Shelter project delivers a focused, high-impact renovation and expansion. Additionally, it transforms two aging, compromised facilities into a cohesive, code-compliant, and purpose-driven animal care environment. Designed by Beazley + Longo Shelter Design, the work centers on a 1,270-square-foot addition. It physically connects, reorganizes, and fully renovates the existing buildings while introducing dedicated veterinary spaces and critical infrastructure upgrades.
The design strategy prioritizes intelligent adaptive reuse rather than a costly full replacement. The team adds and reconfigures spaces to fix circulation and housing problems. This improves staff workflow and environmental control. This approach minimizes disruption during renovation. It aligns with standards for humane care.
New veterinary areas support better medical triage and treatment capacity. We upgraded HVAC to improve air quality, odor control, and climate stability. This result is a flexible, scalable layout. We integrated zones to separate dirty and clean areas. In practice, that eases maintenance and daily operations. Durable, easy-to-clean materials and thoughtful layout reduce stress for animals. These changes also boost staff efficiency and create a cleaner, more professional space for visitors. Staff training programs are supported by the new spaces. The layout reduces travel time between clinics and housing. Overall, the project delivers a more efficient, welcoming environment.
Groundbreaking occurred in September 2024. Subsequently, officials celebrated the completed project with a grand reopening in mid-2026. This is architecture in service of both animal welfare and public stewardship: disciplined scope, specialized technical execution, and measurable improvement delivered through renovation rather than overbuilding. The project stands as a practical model for parishes seeking meaningful facility upgrades without the full cost and disruption of new construction.
